Kunnen wij deze laan van bomen voorstellen als een ‘kloostergang’ van de openlucht kathedraal? Monniken hebben gewandeld en gebeden in zulke kloostergangen zoals op Sint-Agnietenberg, net buiten Zwolle. Daar leefde Thomas á Kempis zestig jaar lang tot 1472. Hier schreef hij zijn wereldberoemde ‘Navolging van Christus’ Het werk was na de Bijbel het meest verbreide boek van de late Middeleeuwen. Wij kunnen ook wandelen, bidden en mediteren langs tijdloze citaten uit dit boek, als wij onze reis door deze Meditatiehof afronden.
Can we imagine this lane of trees to be the ‘cloisters’ of the open-air cathedral? Monks walked and prayed in such cloisters as at Mount St Agnes, just outside Zwolle. There Thomas a Kempis lived for sixty years until 1472, and wrote his world-famous ‘The Imitation of Christ’. Next to the Bible, this was the most widely read book of the late Middle Ages. We can also walk, pray and meditate on the timeless quotations from this book, as we round off our walk through the Meditation garden.
